German Court Criminalizes Religious Circumcision

This is disturbing. From AFP:

Circumcising young boys on religious grounds amounts to grievous bodily harm, a German court ruled Tuesday in a landmark decision that the Jewish community said trampled on parents’ religious rights.

The regional court in Cologne, western Germany, ruled that the “fundamental right of the child to bodily integrity outweighed the fundamental rights of the parents”, a judgement that is expected to set a legal precedent.

“The religious freedom of the parents and their right to educate their child would not be unacceptably compromised, if they were obliged to wait until the child could himself decide to be circumcised,” the court added.

Naturally, the ‘advocates’ of the ban are pleased that the court has ruled:

Holm Putzke of the University of Passau, who has been advocating for years against circumcisions, told the Financial Times Deutschland that “the court has, in contrast to many politicians, not allowed itself to be scared by the fear of being criticized as anti-Semitic or opposed to religion.”

Yep, wouldn’t want to be accused of being anti-Semitic, particularly when you’re being anti-Semitic.

This is daft. Jews have practiced male circumcision for at least 3,000 years. The New Testament records that Jesus was himself circumcised on the eighth day in compliance with Jewish law (Luke 2.21).

I trust there will be an appeal.

UPDATE: A few words from a venerable source:

The the king [Antiochus Epiphanes IV] wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people, and that each should give up his customs. All the Gentiles accepted the command of the king. Many even from Israel gladly adopted his religion; they sacrificed to idols and profaned the sabbath. And the king sent letters by messengers to Jerusalem and the cities of Judah; he directed them to follow customs strange to the land, to forbid burnt offerings and sacrifices and drink offerings in the sanctuary, to profane sabbaths and feasts, to defile the sanctuary and the priests, to build altars and sacred precincts and shrines for idols, to sacrifice swine and unclean animals and to leave their sons uncircumcised . . . so that they should forget the law and change all the ordinances. And whoever does not obey the command of the king shall die.

I Maccabees 1:41-50, cira 165 BC.

Antiochus fancied himself a progressive: his bright idea was to unify everyone within ‘enlightened’ Hellenistic culture. Funny, no one remembers Antiochus these days but the Jews seem to be still around.

Genital mutilation of the young is unnecessary.  The fact that it’s been happening for 3000 years is no excuse to let it continue.  Children have rights, too.  It’s time for our thinking to evolve.
