Kurt Vonnegut’s dystopian classic has now been turned into a motion picture entitled, “2081 – Everyone Will Finally Be Equal”. The film has a good cast that includes Patricia Clarkson, James Cosmo and Julie Haggerty. Here’s a clip:

For those unfamiliar with the Vonnegut short story, Harrison Bergeron is a futuristic view of literal equality in which Diana Moon Glampers – the “United States Handicapper General” – relentlessly assigns physical and mental handicaps to assure that no one is stronger, smarter or better looking than anyone else. Failure to abide by one’s assigned handicap is a criminal offense.

During the 1993 debate over the Hillary health care proposal, the Wall Street Journal published the story in its entirety on the paper’s op-ed page. It’s that powerful.
