Harry Reid: Don’t Know Much About History

Today Harry Reid compared Republicans who want to scrap the current health-care hijack to people “who dug in their heels and said slow down” when the country “belatedly recognized the evils of slavery”.

Is the man completely daft? I’m certain I read somewhere that the Republican Party was the party of abolition, that prosecuted the Civil War to the bitter end and smashed the peculiar institution, that passed the 13th and 14th Amendments, the Civil Rights Act of 1866, created the Freedmen’s Bureau, attempted Reconstruction and provided the votes necessary to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was opposed by Southern Democrats, including Al Gore’s daddy.

I seem to recall that African-Americans were solidly Republican until Democrats seduced the country into the Great Society welfare state. I’m certain I read somewhere that Martin Luther King, Jr. was himself a Republican. A Republican, I should add, who fought Democrats blocking the school house door.
