We always want to give the president the benefit of the doubt but unfortunately this story about says it all.
As reported in Foreign Policy on December 2d, during a stop at Elmendorf AFB on his way to Asia last month, Hope ‘n Change refused to be photographed in front of the F-22 fighter, which is based there. He and his aides insisted that an F-15 fighter be substituted instead. Like Ed Morrissey at Hot Air, I view this as supremely petty and an insult to the troops who maintain the 187 F-22s already in the US inventory.
Now, it’s true that he worked to kill the F-22 program. Fair enough. Other presidents have killed other defense programs and we don’t necessarily hold it against them. But in this case, what’s the harm in having the F-22 in the shot? We own nearly 200 of the bloody things and by all accounts it’s the best air defense fighter in the world, bar none.
For me, it speaks volumes about where Hope ‘n Change’s head is really at. Given his background and associations, he views defense-related matters as a trifling distraction interrupting his quest to appropriate all of our property and incomes for the greater good – whatever the hell that is.
In a similar vein, his West Point speech this week on Afghanistan was weak indeed – he can’t seem to utter the words “victory” or “win”. While I understand that we’re in Afghanistan as an urgent matter of national security – it’s an Islamist breeding ground, after all – he doesn’t seem to feel much urgency at all. But give the man a car company to nationalize, and he’s fleet of foot.
In short, the man simply doesn’t have his mind right – unlike a certain West Point cadet who decided to catch up on his reading while waiting for Hope ‘n Change to speak. We can only pray that Hope ‘n Change and his cult-followers figure out that there really are barbarians outside the gate and it wasn’t America that created them.
