My Next Shotgun

Just kidding. A trapshooting buddy sent me the following video. Being a joker himself, the subject line of his email was entitled, “My Next Trap Gun”. Somehow, I don’t think the Amateur Trapshooting Association would approve of the Atchisson Assault Shotgun AA-12.

For the uninitiated, a shotgun is a terrifying weapon. At close range, I would prefer to be hit by just about anything else. It’s a guaranteed show-stopper if, say, you have a room full of bad guys to clear.

The US military has employed combat shotguns since WWI – basically pump shotguns modified with a bayonet mount. For years, the official nomenclature for the combat shotgun was “trench gun” – presumably because they were used to clear trenches in WWI. The Germans positively hated them and complained that their use violated the rules of warfare – which is a real knee-slapper from the people who introduced poison gas at Ypres in 1915.

The military recently adopted the Benelli M-4 as its standard combat shotgun. It’s a great gun. But the AA-12 is in a class by itself. It combines large magazine capacity, high rate of fire and a variety of munitions that take its effective range out to 200 yards – far beyond that of a conventional shotgun. Enjoy.
