Demonize the Health Insurance Companies. They’re a Convenient Target.

I found this comment on one of my older postings entitled, Health Care Plan or Snuff Plan? You be the Judge. In the posting, I criticized specific “cost saving” measures contained in the House bill.

The current complaints that people have are the result of a massively for-profit system that needs to be changed. It’s the INSURANCE companies who deny and RATION care, it’s the INSURANCE companies who limit reimbursement rates, it’s the INSURANCE companies who set policy with no other consideration than making as huge a profit as they can. And they are spending a TON of money on this disinformation campaign. If you check out who is paying the bills for the guys who write this article, you’ll almost certainly find insurance company money somewhere. People are DYING because of this plan, and we need an alternative!

As you can read, the commenter – probably a troll – is a monomaniac, obsessed with the idea that someone, somewhere might actually make a profit on something. But how much profit do the health insurance companies make, on average, compared to other industries? Let’s take a look. Click image on right to enlarge. Data courtesy of Yahoo Finance.

So, health insurers have, on average, a 3.3 per cent profit margin. That puts them 86th on Yahoo’s industry listing.

Some profit.

Thanks to Carpe Diem for the graphics, which I shamelessly stole.
