A very amusing video from Reason TV, taking a satirical look at the adventures of an injured man in a government-run emergency room. Sort of like dealing with the DMV whilst bleeding and in shock.
While the video is amusing, it only hints at a larger problem with government-run systems: budgeting and allocation of resources. Remember, when the government runs the works, the amount of money allocated to individual localities becomes just another political football up and down the political food chain, much the same as Medicare, Medicaid and the VA are today. It really gets ugly when the amount and types of care available in different locales become mixed up with ongoing political grudges and grievances of the most unsavory sort.
That’s what’s happening in Britain today. As Wales and Scotland have devolved from Westminster and organized their own parliaments, a similar movement has organized itself in England. Calling themselves ‘The English Democrats’, the party advocates a devolved English parliament and an ‘English’ national identity similar to that claimed by Scotland and Wales. While the new party hasn’t had much electoral success thus far – and defends itself against allegations of similarity to racist groups like the BNP – it does know how to exploit a grievance. And one of those grievances is the uneven allocation of National Health Service resources. Here’s one ad:
There are better ways to provide health care than through the political process. That much should be obvious.
Hat tip to Ed Morrissey for the Reason TV video.
