As the World Turns

And while we slept, the world continued to turn in spite of the following stories:

North Korea Fires Its Second Nuke. Monitors in Japan and China detected a local earthquake in a seismically inactive area of North Korea where the Norks tested their first device in 2006. Satellite pictures apparently captured an ‘energetic’ fireball emerging above ground, which would indicate that containment was not complete. I suspect that we have rad monitors covering the area, so we’ll be able to tell a lot about the test from any fission fragments we’re able to obtain.

Naturally, most everybody is upset. South Korea, China, Japan, the US, the rest of Asia and so on. Problem is, there’s no will to do anything about it and little chance that the Norks are interested in any ’solution’ that deprives them of their toys. Toys, we should hasten to add, that they’re only too happy to share with the likes of Hezbollah or Iran. Gateway Pundit has a very interesting collection of photos and links.

Bebe Netanyahu Defies Obama. At least that’s Reuter’s headline. What Netanyahu really said is that while Israel won’t build any new west bank settlements, they’re not adverse to new construction in existing settlements. As Ed Morrissey points out, this is a rebuke to Obama’s goal of forcing Israel back into a ‘roadmap’ that most everybody has abandoned. Moreover, Netanyahu is not willing for Israel to become the doormat of Hope ‘n Change’s middle east ambitions.

Colin Powell Whines. As reported by The Politico, Powell seems to think that Democrat-lite is the way to go and referred to Vice President Cheney on the Sunday shows as ‘Mr. Cheney’ while advocating closure of Gitmo. Clearly, Powell doesn’t like Cheney much and the bad blood probably goes back to Bush XLI’s administration, when Cheney was Powell’s boss during Desert Storm. In my humble opinion, he’s a guy who’s bitten just every hand that’s fed him and he’s not to be trusted. His latest act of perfidy was his very public shafting of John McCain, a GOP ‘moderate’ if there ever was one.
