A Program Conceived in Falsehood

Ed Morrissey discusses the politics of carbon emissions and in particular the ‘cap and trade’ scheme being pushed by Waxman and Co. in Congress. The main takeaway from Ed’s piece is that any centralized apparatus trying to apportion benefits and burdens invariably becomes a source of political antagonism and even sectional strife between the benefited and burdened. This is just a taste of what we’ll see when ObamaCare bureaucrats try to allocate healthcare dollars.

But in the end, what is any of this for? The entire premise on which ‘global climate change’ is based is a fraud. The world is simply not warming. And it’s quite amusing to see beautiful people run up against reality. Take the collection of British nitwits calling themselves the ‘Catlin Arctic Survey’.

These three ’explorers’ planned to walk to the North Pole, dragging their supplies on sledges in the manner of Robert Falcon Scott in Antarctica. And along the way they were going to measure the ice thickness and demonstrate how a melting icecap places us all in peril.  Even Prince Charlie supported the effort in suitably emotional and apocalyptic tones (‘For the sake of our children and grandchildren, I pray that we will heed the findings of the Catlin arctic survey’).  Good grief.

Problem was, the ice was thick - not thin - and the weather unseasonably cold.  So cold, in fact, that their drilling equipment broke.  They made about 400 miles of their 1000 mile trip before the intense cold forced them to call it quits.  To add insult to injury, in an article about the expedition, the UK Telegraph reported that there are US Army buoys in the arctic measuring the ice thickness quite nicely without their drilling efforts.

As James Delingpole points out in his UK Telegraph blog, arctic temperatures haven’t really changed a whit since observations began in the 1940s. If anything, the temperatures were actually warmer in 1940s than they are today. Steven Goddard has neatly graphed the data on the Watts Up With That website.

At what point do the Al Gores of this world admit their folly?  Can they?  And will we cripple our economy for a falsehood?
