This is the kind of irritating, intrusive nonsense that makes people weary of their government and every smarmy bureaucratic microbe in it.
Cheerios. For God’s sake, CHEERIOS. My favorite cereal, beloved by toddlers and adults alike. Healthy. Nutritious. Tasty. Satisfying.
So, what’s the problem?
Well, it appears that the FDA is hassling General Mills because the Cheerios box contains a claim that eating the product could lower your cholesterol. The FDA says that GM can only make that claim if Cheerios is an approved drug. After a ‘consumer group’ complained to the FDA about the ad claim, the FDA wrote General Mills CEO Ken Powell a letter that began with this brilliant sentence:
Based on claims made on your product’s label, we have determined that your Cheerios® Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal is promoted for conditions that cause it to be a drug because the product is intended for use in the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of disease.
At the rate we’re going, apples will be deemed an unapproved drug because of the old saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’.
We pay these busybodies to hassle us. Think about it.

Nice try. Actually, I meant it precisely as I wrote it, as did the Bard in Hamlet, Act I, Scene II, where Hamlet says, ‘O God, O God, how weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world!’

Good on ya! Definitely keep your focus on Cheerios. That will keep you out of the way so we can get on with putting things back together so that your children and mine will have a tolerable world to live in. I like mine with Dijon, by the way.
