Busting Israel’s Chops – the Rahm Emanuel Way

We Americans tend to be fat, dumb and happy. We usually ignore the rest of the world until someone bombs Pearl Harbor or flies a jet into a building.

The rest of the world is different. In countries like South Korea and Israel, there’s an understandable existential angst. They live in crazy neighborhoods and they give thanks for just getting through the day without someone firing a rocket or popping a nuke. Needless to say, they tend to hang on every word from the U.S. political establishment.

So, when Rahm Emanuel opens his big mouth about Israel, the Israelis listen up. From the Jerusalem Post:

The task of forming an international coalition to thwart Iran’s nuclear program will be made easier if progress is made in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has said, according to sources in Washington.

Israeli TV stations had reported Monday night that Emanuel had actually linked the two matters, saying that the efforts to stop Iran hinged on peace talks with the Palestinians. The remarks were reportedly made in a closed-door meeting previous day with 300 major AIPAC donors on Sunday.

Last month, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Israel that it risks losing Arab support for combating threats from Iran if it rejects peace negotiations with the Palestinians.

Clinton said Arab nations had conditioned helping Israel counter Iran on Jerusalem’s commitment to the peace process.

Let’s unpack this, shall we?

First, over the last decade we’ve seen a growing – and unholy – alliance between Islamists and the American left. Watching university demonstrations these days is like watching Kristallnacht – not only anti-Israel, but anti-semitic. And Hezbullah and Hamas – both creatures of Iran – are the official mascots.

Second, it’s no secret that the permanent government in Washington – including the folks at Foggy Bottom – dislike PM Netanyahu. He’s a non-compliant child whose chief occupation is Israel’s survival – and to hell with a ‘peace process’ that includes Hamas.

Third, the very idea of a ‘peace process’ is ridiculous – it’s all process and no peace. There’s no decision and no goal line. That’s why leftists love it – it’s interminable.

Enter Rahm Emanuel. He’s saying to PM Netanyahu, ‘who’s your daddy’? And Netanyahu so far has not responded. Which is why this punk is telling AIPAC that help with Iran is conditioned on Israel’s compliance with the ‘peace process’.

But everyone knows this is obnoxious nonsense. The world has to deal with Iran regardless of Israel. Iran and Israel may coincide but the Iranian problem is not ultimately linked to Israel. The world simply can’t afford an Iran that possesses nuclear weapons and ballistic missile technology. And so far, ‘international coalitions’ haven’t done much to stop Iran.
