Being There

Watching Hope ‘n Change apologize for all of us across Europe, grovel to the Saudi king, buddy up to Hugo Chavez and maintain silence during Daniel Ortega’s rant has me in the mood for a cheap shot or two.

His vacant performance down south and Dr. Axelrod’s reference to ‘planting seeds’ brings to mind Peter Seller’s performance in the 1979 film ‘Being There’. Sellers plays “Chance” an intellectually-challenged middle-aged gardener who talks about what he knows: gardening and the cartoons he watches on TV.

Through happenstance, he finds himself giving ‘advice’ to the leaders of industry, finance and even to the President of the United States. His dress, bearing and demeanor all combine to make his first-grade pronouncements seem profound – to the dismay and disgust of the people who really know him.
