Our lip gloss civilization can be a dreary thing indeed. It seldom gets beyond appearances and misjudges even that. In a world where the mortal sin is ‘doesn’t look good on television’, it’s refreshing to see something that goes beyond our self-limiting boundaries.
Consider Susan Boyle, a 47-year old woman from lowland Scotland appearing on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, yet another talent show produced by the ubiquitous Simon Cowell. Susan is, to put it politely, unattractive. And she was met with jeers from the crowd and skepticism from the judges – until she opened her mouth to sing.
Unfortunately, I’m unable to embed the video, so before you head over to YouTube, consider for a moment the contrast between God’s view of us and our view of ourselves. There’s cause for humility and wonder in this.
