So far, Hope ‘n Change has been more like Robespierre than Lincoln. Whereas Lincoln spoke of ‘malice toward none’ and ‘charity to all’, Hope ‘n Change might be willing to save you from the pitchfork-bearing mob he created.
There’s a reason why he vilifies people and groups. He wants to control them – by a mob if necessary. That’s why, as Stu Varney points out, he’s willing to create and channel rage at the banks:
It is not for nothing that rage has been turned on those wicked financiers. The banks are at the core of the administration’s thrust: By managing the money, government can steer the whole economy even more firmly down the left fork in the road.
And as Bloomberg reports, Boy Geithner will doubtless be sacking officers and boards of institutions he feels need ‘exceptional assistence’. Without the consent of the banks’ shareholders, without recourse to the corporations’ bylaws and indeed, without reference to law of any kind at all.
It’s a truism that lawlessness begets lawlessness. Those who exceed their lawful authority often find themselves before a ‘peoples tribunal’ or some other such kangaroo court trying to avoid a noose that’s now drawn for them.
That’s why we would give even the devil – or bankers – benefit of law, if only for our own safety’s sake.
