Blame it on the Second Amendment

The hits just keep on coming.

Now Hope ‘n Change wants to re-institute the ban on ‘assault weapons’ that expired in 2004. The expired ban was the work of Sen. Diane Feinstein back in 1994. The story is that she sat down with firearms catalogs and picked out weapons that she thought looked ‘threatening’ and then went to work extending the ban for 10 years.

But I digress.

From ABC News:

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

Wednesday Attorney General Eric Holder said that the Obama administration will seek to reinstitute the assault weapons ban which expired in 2004 during the Bush administration.

“As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons,” Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

“I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum.” Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

Mexican government officials have complained that the availability of sophisticated guns from the United States have emboldened drug traffickers to fight over access routes into the U.S.

That last bit is rich, isn’t it? Corrupt Mexican government officials try to blame their corruption on ‘sophisticated’ US guns. Not that it would convince an ignorant fanatic, but the difference between an ‘assault’ weapon and a non-assault firearm is largely cosmetic. Both typically fire a 5.56 mm or 7.62mm cartridge. One is banned and another is not – based on their appearance. Sophisticated, indeed.

But leave it to ABC to go the extra mile. Linked to their story is another story from April 2008, ‘U.S. Guns Arming Mexican Drug Gangs; Second Amendment to Blame?’. Yes, let’s blame it on the Second Amendment. It’s that damned Constitution’s fault. Not the criminals, who can pass unchallenged across a porous border or our government, which does nothing about it.

By the way, included in the latter story is this photo of a masked man. He’s using an M-60 machine gun – which U.S. citizens cannot obtain unless they’re willing to break into a National Guard armory.

But hell, let’s just blame it on the Second Amendment. It’s easier.
