Hope ‘n Change’s Bad Week – The ‘Stimulus’ Bill

At the rate Hope ‘n Change is going, people will be longing for the ‘golden age’ of the Bush presidency. He’s managed to look both incompetent and weak and he’s only been president for 17 days. So far, he’s got Jimmy Carter beat. Carter’s honeymoon lasted a month. But I digress. Let’s talk about the ‘Stimulus’ Bill.

Rasmussen is now reporting that the tide has decidedly turned against it.

Support for the economic recovery plan working its way through Congress has fallen again this week. For the first time, a plurality of voters nationwide oppose the $800-billion-plus plan.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 37% favor the legislation, 43% are opposed, and 20% are not sure.

Two weeks ago, 45% supported the plan. Last week, 42% supported it.

Opposition has grown from 34% two weeks ago to 39% last week and 43% today.

Sixty-four percent (64%) of Democrats still support the plan. That figure is down from 74% a week ago. Just 13% of Republicans and 27% of those not affiliated with either major party agree.

Seventy-two percent (72%) of Republicans oppose the plan along with 50% of unaffiliated voters and 16% of Democrats.

What’s even more surprising is that fully half of voters say whatever ‘finally emerges from Congress may end up doing more harm than good.’

Hope ‘n Change has a couple of basic mistakes to his credit. First, he let Congress write the legislation rather than manage the drafting process himself. He just had to know that Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank would arrogantly overreach and make a complete piggy hash of it.

Second, he’s allowed himself to be tarred with the likes of Pelosi and Frank. Here’s an observation: there’s nothing – repeat nothing – remotely subtle about either of them and they both have a long history of being unlikeable bullies. Yet, he finds himself in the position of appearing helpless before them and his own party in Congress. Hence, his desperate efforts to charm Republicans into drinking the kool aid along with him.

Here’s a news flash: the more people find out about this bill, the more they hate it. And the more they know Pelosi and Frank, the more they hate them too. Barney Frank’s arrogant comments to a banker’s group today will do nothing to improve his image.

And Hope ‘n Change is stuck with these twits.  He can have them.

And you can now add one more item for this Bad Week–in the midst of debating a $900 billion dollar stimulus package President Obama signs a bill expanding the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) that is being paid for by a TAX INCREASE of 62 cents per pack of cigarettes. Besides being a tax increase, which will not help the economy recover, it will be particularly devastating to small businesses owners who will have to pay the extra tax on their current cigarette inventory. This will only compound their cash flow problems and might lead to higher job losses. How’s that for stimulus?
