Change You Can Believe In

Or was it hope? Or Hope ‘n Change?

Speaking of Hope ‘n Change, here’s a good example of the Gitmo ‘catch and release’ program at work. It seems that some of the poor, misunderstood innocents released from Carribean Club Fed have gone back to work for Al-Qaeda, Inc. in its wholly-owned Iraq subsidiary. From AFP (more on them in a moment):

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Two men released from the US “war on terror” prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba have appeared in a video posted on a jihadist website, the SITE monitoring service reported.

One of the two former inmates, a Saudi man identified as Abu Sufyan al-Azdi al-Shahri, or prisoner number 372, has been elevated to the senior ranks of Al-Qaeda in Yemen, a US counter-terrorism official told AFP.

Three other men appear in the video, including Abu al-Hareth Muhammad al-Oufi, identified as an Al-Qaeda field commander. SITE later said he was prisoner No. 333.

A Pentagon spokesman, Commander Jeffrey Gordon, on Saturday declined to confirm the SITE information.

“We remain concerned about ex-Guantanamo detainees who have re-affiliated with terrorist organizations after their departure,” said Gordon.

“We will continue to work with the international community to mitigate the threat they pose,” he said.

On the video, al-Shihri is seen sitting with three other men before a flag of the Islamic State of Iraq, the front for Al-Qaeda in Iraq.

“By Allah, imprisonment only increased our persistence in our principles for which we went out, did jihad for, and were imprisoned for,” al-Shihri was quoted as saying.

Al-Shiri was transferred from Guantanamo to Saudi Arabia in 2007, the US counter-terrorism official said.

Looking at the pictures on the AFP site, these guys look awfully well-fed to me. And it looks like our friends the Saudis did a swell job of keeping Al-Shiri out of mischief, too. If they’re back in Iraq, we can only hope that they don’t hurt anyone before our guys can give ‘em a loving double-tap to the head – after reading them their rights, of course. Wouldn’t want to forget that part.

As to AFP (short for Agence France-Presse), note the scare quotes around the phrase ‘war on terror.’ In case you were wondering, AFP is one of the largest news organizations in the world (along with al Reuters and the AP) and, like the other three, seems to love all things Islamic – and terroristic – while hating all things Israeli and Jewish. AFP’s cheerleading for Hamas during Israel’s smackdown was barely disguised. In fact, it was so bad that the Powerline guys did a smackdown of their own.

But back to the larger question: these are precisely the kinds of guys for whom Hope ‘n Change and his political backers feel sympathy. In a grand inversion, they tell us that our desire to resist Islamofascism is immoral and that our would-be killers are innocent. Moreover, if we simply weren’t so mean to our killers, they wouldn’t want to kill us at all. And Hope ‘n Change and his backers are going to make sure we drink the kool aid along with them.

Now there’s change you can believe in.
