In ‘The Theology of Carbon’ I discussed the theology of global warming advocacy in general and Stephen Hockman’s fanaticism in particular.
Apparently, the UN Conference on Climate Change in Poland isn’t going according to plan – the warming crowd’s plan, that is. It seems there’s a good deal of bickering among members of the EU – coal-dependent eastern-bloc countries are naturally reluctant to cripple their own economies in the middle of an economic slowdown. From Sky News:
There are just two days left of this year’s UN climate change conference in Poland.
Gordon Brown is travelling to Brussels this morning to try and break a deadlock between some of the bloc’s 27 members over how to reach deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.
Poland and other Eastern European nations have argued that reaching an emissions cut of 20% by 2020 would be financially crippling for their coal-based economies, while Germany and Italy have lent them support.
But, despite fears that a final deal could be in jeopardy, EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said he was confident things can be resolved by the Friday deadline.
He said: “We are going to have an agreement. I can assure you that the reductions targets, 20% by 2020 and the other targets that we have set in renewables, will be intact.”
The EU has traditionally considered itself a world leader on climate change, but the internal row has meant its delegation has been unusually quiet during the UN conference in Poznan.
Campaigners are concerned the leadership vacuum will leave the talks floundering.
One of the issues overshadowing the conference is the growing chorus of climate ‘skeptics’ (I call them ‘scientists’) who are now openly challenging Al Gore and the entire warming crowd. Probably timed to foul up the conference in Poland, the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works released today an update of its 2007 Minority Report on Climate Change. The 231-page updated report cites 650 scientists (many former warming supporters) who now openly express their skepticism about the science behind ‘global warming’. From the introduction:
Over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe challenged man-made global warming claims made by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former Vice President Al Gore. This new 231-page U.S. Senate Minority Report report — updated from 2007’s groundbreaking report of over 400 scientists who voiced skepticism about the so-called global warming “consensus” — features the skeptical voices of over 650 prominent international scientists, including many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN IPCC. This updated report includes an additional 250 (and growing) scientists and climate researchers since the initial release in December 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media-hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.
The chorus of skeptical scientific voices grew louder in 2008 as a steady stream of peer reviewed studies, analyses, real world data and inconvenient developments challenged the UN and former Vice President Al Gore’s claims that the “science is settled” and there is a “consensus.” On a range of issues, 2008 proved to be challenging for the promoters of man-made climate fears. Promoters of anthropogenic warming fears endured the following: Global temperatures failing to warm; Peer-reviewed studies predicting a continued lack of warming; a failed attempt to revive the discredited “Hockey Stick”; inconvenient developments and studies regarding CO2; the Sun; Clouds; Antarctica; the Arctic; Greenland; Mount Kilimanjaro; Hurricanes; Extreme Storms; Floods; Ocean Acidification; Polar Bears; lack of atmospheric dust; the failure of oceans to warm and rise as predicted.
In addition, the following developments further secured 2008 as the year the “consensus” collapsed. Russian scientists “rejected the very idea that carbon dioxide may be responsible for global warming”. An American Physical Society editor conceded that a “considerable presence” of scientific skeptics exist. An International team of scientists countered the UN IPCC, declaring: “Nature, Not Human Activity, Rules the Climate”.
India Issued a report challenging global warming fears. International Scientists demanded the UN IPCC “be called to account and cease its deceptive practices,” and a canvass of more than 51,000 Canadian scientists revealed 68% disagree that global warming science is “settled.”
Question for the day: how much longer must we endure this charade, this travesty of science?
